Ultrasonic Strip Cleaning Systems
Zenith Manufacturing is a leading supplier of ultrasonic
cleaning systems for the stamping and metal machining industries. Since
many such manufacturers stamp their product using coils of metal strip, a
cleaning method was required which could clean these materials faster, safer,
and with better cleaning results when compared to the traditional spray washing
systems in use for these materials. Contaminants requiring removal include
stamping oils, and metallic particles.
In the past, manufacturers of stamped metallic strip materials
relied on spray washing systems to address the removal of oils and particles
from the product. However, there are limitations to these designs.
If you are cleani ng
strip materials that may bend when subjected to a spray operation, the strip
materials will be damaged. If the strip design includes folds of metals,
where oils can be trapped between 2 neighboring metal surfaces, a spray washer
may not consistently clean your product. Maintenance on a spray washer is
considerable, as is water lost through evaporation. Nozzles require
constant cleaning to ensure that the spray pattern is satisfactory for
successful cleaning.
A Zenith SSS-960 Ultrasonic Strip Washing System overcomes the
limitations of a spray washing system by utilizing the precision,
low-maintenance cleaning capabilities of ultrasonic cleaning technology.
By incorporating this technology, even the most sensitive strip materials can be
processed without damage. Removing oils from folded metal areas is easily
accomplished, and the ultrasonic cleaning effect penetrates into the very
surface detail itself, yielding a medical-quality cleaning result if required.
Strip material is passed horizontally through a series of ports
and chambers in the system, and connected to optional Strip Drive Systems which
pulls the material through the system at the same rate of speed as the stamping
operation, allowing for convenient connecti on
to Spool Take-up Equipment on the exit side of the cleaning system.
Loading is an easy task, thanks to the stainless steel hinged access cover which
includes polycarbonate viewports. The system can be loaded in under 1
minute.
Strip material entering the SSS-960 is first subjected to the
ultrasonic cleaning chamber, which bombards the material with
CROSSFIRE Multiple Frequency
Ultrasonics to rapidly remove all contaminants from the surface of the strip.
The included Spray Under Submersion Nozzles add to the effectiveness of the
cleaning chamber by removing the largest volumes of oils, and can be used to
directly address detailed part areas. The ultrasonic system has the
ability to penetrate the microscopic "hills & valleys" on the surface of the
material, leaving no residues behind, even in the most detailed areas of the
strip.
Oils which are removed from the product are siphoned to the
heated Cleaning Fluid Holding Tank, which stores the fluid, heating it to
operating temperature, and filtering it with optional
Filtration Systems, if required,
to maximize the life of the cleaning fluid.
As the strip material exits the cleaning chamber, excess
cleaning fluid is removed by the included stainless steel air knife assembly.
By removing the detergent from the strip before it enters the rinsing chamber,
rinse water integrity is preserved which minimizes rinse water consumption,
while simultaneously preventing detergent spotting on the material being
cleaned.
Next, the strip material enters the included ultrasonic rinsing
chamber which includes high frequency ultrasonics to penetrate every area of the
material, ensuring that all detergent residues have been removed. Optional
water treatment systems, such as closed loop deionization, are available if
medical quality cleaning results are required.
The
use of ultrasonic components in the rinse tank provides mechanical scrubbing of
the strip surface with the even energy distribution of high-frequency
ultrasonics. Additional information regarding frequencies and their
effects can be found under the "Ultrasonic College" drop down list under
Frequency Selection.
The strip material is then using a custom air wipe assembly and
a combination of 2-sided air knife assemblies which utilizes factory compressed
air to completely dry the material. The material then exits the system and
is recoiled immediately using existing take-up equipment. The final result
is spot-free, medical-quality cleaning of the material without damage to the
surface.
Maintaining a Zenith ultrasonic strip washing system is
simplicity itself. the system requires only periodic cleaning and
replacement of cleaning and rinsing fluids when required. optional
filtration systems will further reduce required holding tank cleaning
operations, which are easily performed using the included ball valve-equipped
drain and fill ports.
If medical quality cleaning results are required, deionized
water will be required in the rinse tank. deionized water which has been
filtered to remove any contaminants which may leave residues on the parts after
drying. This water dries absolutely spot free, and rinse water holding
tank maintenance is reduced. However, the deionization system itself
requires maintenance of its own.
With a Zenith SSS-960 cleaning system, evaporative losses are
reduced drastically since water is never vaporized by spray nozzles. As a
result, operational costs are reduced since heating systems can be smaller in
size. Heating systems represent the largest electrical consumption devices
on any cleaning system.
In many cases, the SSS-960 is directly connected to the stamping
press. When the stamping press turns off, the compressed air to cleaning
system is also turned off, in the system may be programmed to shut down fully
automatically. If the optional Strip Drive System is purchased, this
system communicates with the take-up equipment to ensure that the strip material
is spooled properly.
The SSS-960 ultrasonic strip washing system is manufactured
largely of type 304 stainless steel for superior long-term corrosion resistance.
All wetted surfaces are either stainless steel, or compatible plastic materials.
Smooth-transition Strip Guides are included throughout the machine to support
the strip and prevent damage. Internally-mounted components are
conveniently positioned near the front of the machine. Filtration housings
are externally mounted for convenient access. Level switches prevent
operation of the heating or ultrasonic systems in the event of low liquid
levels.
Optional equipment includes Automatic Water Level Maintenance,
Signal Towers to indicate when holding tanks require additional liquid, Closed
Loop Deionization Systems if medical-quality results are required and no
deionized water supply exists, and Rinse Water Quality Meters to indicate when
rinse water requires replacement.
